There is something incredibly special about photographing your newborn at home. It’s your safe haven from the world, and where all the firsts for your baby will happen. Additionally, an in-home session captures all the little details that you’ll never want to forget! Snuggles on the couch, quiet moments in the nursery, and the everyday love that fills your space. To help you get the most out of your session, here are my top five newborn in home photography tips for preparing your home, your baby, and your family.
Natural light is one of the key ingredients to soft, timeless newborn photos. Before your session, walk around your house during the day and notice where the light is best. Look for large windows and rooms that feel warm and inviting when the sunlight pours in.
We typically shoot in 1–2 rooms, and this often includes the nursery, the living room, or a master bedroom. Don’t worry about having a “perfect” home. What matters most is the light and the love that fills the space!
Timing is everything with newborns. The best sessions usually start when baby has just been fed and has a fresh diaper. A full tummy helps them stay calm and sleepy, which makes for those dreamy, snuggly photos we all love.
You don’t need to do much more than that! Just keep baby cozy in a simple swaddle or neutral onesie, and I’ll take care of the rest.
Family members, especially big siblings, play such a special role in newborn sessions! Before the session, take a moment to set expectations. Let everyone know it’ll be relaxed and fun, and that we’ll be done in about an hour.
Kids often do great when they’re involved, so let them help pick out accessories or small details within the boundaries of the style guide I provide. And yes, bribes are absolutely okay! A little treat or reward afterward can work wonders for cooperation and smiles.
Make sure everyone knows what they’ll be wearing well in advance to reduce stress the day of. Soft, neutral tones always photograph beautifully and help the baby stand out in the images.
This is for you too, mom! You’re in the photos, and I want you to feel radiant and relaxed. Take some time before the session to pamper yourself. Whether that’s doing your hair and makeup, putting on your favorite cozy dress, or just taking 20 quiet minutes to breathe—it makes a difference.
Let dad take over baby duty while you get ready, and please don’t worry about making your home spotless. We’re focusing on connection, not perfection.
Every newborn session is a little different, and that’s the beauty of it! Babies may need to eat, get a diaper change, or just want extra cuddles. That’s all part of the experience, and we will take our time with it.
Some of the most meaningful images come from those unscripted moments: a yawn, a stretch, a sibling sneaking a kiss. I’ll guide you through gentle posing and natural interactions, so you never feel like you have to “perform” for the camera.
