Sibling involvement starts long before the camera clicks. Preparing them ahead of time helps set expectations and makes them feel like an important part of the experience. A day or two before the session, explain that you’ll be taking special photos with the baby. Frame it as a fun activity rather than a task and let them help!

Let your older child choose a small prop (like a favorite book or blanket) or pick between two outfit options. This gives them a sense of ownership, which brings more confidence into the session! In addition, bring along comfort items like their favorite toy, blanket, or even snacks!

Remember, we’re not expecting perfection, just connection.

Posing Ideas for Newborn Photos with Siblings

Every child is different, so I tailor posing to your child’s age and comfort level. Safety and natural connection are always the priority when it comes to newborn photos with siblings! Here are some tried-and-true sibling pose ideas:

• Side-by-side snuggles: Lying on a soft blanket or bed, your older child gently snuggles next to baby. This cute family brought baby girl’s blanket outside to their backyard and we had their boys cuddle up behind her. It was such a precious moment as the boys played with sister’s toes and smiled at her yawns and coos.
• Kisses & hand-holding: Sweet kisses on the forehead or holding the newborn’s hand. These simple gestures are full of emotion. Plus, these candid poses are great for parents who are a little more nervous to let siblings hold their newborn sibling.
• Sitting with support: If your older child is able, they can sit cradling the baby in their lap with pillows or support behind them. This may just be my personal favorite of all the poses for newborn photos with siblings. It brings everyone together and just creates the most tender moments.
• Lifestyle moments: These are the candid shots you want! Reading to the baby, playing peekaboo, or gently touching baby’s toes while cuddled on a couch or bed.

Toddlers might only cooperate for a few moments, and that’s okay. I work quickly to capture the magic in between.

Keeping It Stress-Free for the Whole Family

Let’s be honest, adding a newborn and a toddler to the mix can feel overwhelming. But a little flexibility and a lot of patience go a long way! I make family photos with newborns easy by avoiding putting too much pressure on kids and simply following their lead. If they are over a certain pose, or ready to move onto a break or snack time, we will roll with it.

In addition to my go with the flow attitude, I try to keep things fun and interactive! I engage siblings with games, silly prompts, or letting them “help” with the session. And as always, comfort is key! Whether we are doing an in home newborn session, or in a studio, we will make sure everyone is at ease and comfortable.

Outfit and Styling Tips for Newborn Photos with Siblings

Coordinating outfits can help create cohesive, beautiful images without feeling too staged. Here are some of my suggestions, as well as some of my favorites that I have seen from past clients.

• Stick to soft neutrals: Cream, beige, blush, sage, or soft blue photograph beautifully with newborn skin tones. It also creates a calming and heavenly atmosphere, which is perfect for the occasion!
• Avoid matching: Instead of identical outfits, opt for a complementary color palette with a mix of textures (knits, cottons, lace). This subtle mix adds visual interest and depth to your photos while creating a cohesive, elevated look that feels both natural and timeless.
• Comfort first: Especially for young kids! If they’re itchy, stiff, or too hot, it’ll show in the photos. I recommend having a try on before the day of the session to make sure everything fits nicely and is comfortable.

Bonus tip: Lay out all outfits the day before to reduce stress on the morning of your session. As a mom myself, this is a must for family sessions!
