Welcoming a new baby is a beautiful chapter in your family’s story, and as a mom I know how one of the most heartwarming parts is watching siblings meet and bond with the newest member. Newborn photos with siblings go beyond cute poses. They capture the love, curiosity, and real connection between your children. Moments that are truly once-in-a-lifetime.
As a Cleveland newborn photographer, I know how important these early interactions are. This blog will guide you through how to prepare siblings for the session, pose ideas that feel natural and safe, and tips to keep everyone (yes, even toddlers!) relaxed and happy.
Sibling involvement starts long before the camera clicks. Preparing them ahead of time helps set expectations and makes them feel like an important part of the experience. A day or two before the session, explain that you’ll be taking special photos with the baby. Frame it as a fun activity rather than a task and let them help!
Let your older child choose a small prop (like a favorite book or blanket) or pick between two outfit options. This gives them a sense of ownership, which brings more confidence into the session! In addition, bring along comfort items like their favorite toy, blanket, or even snacks!
Remember, we’re not expecting perfection, just connection.
Every child is different, so I tailor posing to your child’s age and comfort level. Safety and natural connection are always the priority when it comes to newborn photos with siblings! Here are some tried-and-true sibling pose ideas:
Toddlers might only cooperate for a few moments, and that’s okay. I work quickly to capture the magic in between.
Let’s be honest, adding a newborn and a toddler to the mix can feel overwhelming. But a little flexibility and a lot of patience go a long way! I make family photos with newborns easy by avoiding putting too much pressure on kids and simply following their lead. If they are over a certain pose, or ready to move onto a break or snack time, we will roll with it.
In addition to my go with the flow attitude, I try to keep things fun and interactive! I engage siblings with games, silly prompts, or letting them “help” with the session. And as always, comfort is key! Whether we are doing an in home newborn session, or in a studio, we will make sure everyone is at ease and comfortable.
Coordinating outfits can help create cohesive, beautiful images without feeling too staged. Here are some of my suggestions, as well as some of my favorites that I have seen from past clients.
Bonus tip: Lay out all outfits the day before to reduce stress on the morning of your session. As a mom myself, this is a must for family sessions!
These aren’t just cute photos, they’re visual proof of the love that began from the very first days. Capturing your older child gently holding or gazing at their new sibling tells a story that words simply can’t. These images document the earliest moments of their relationship, reflect the natural wonder and tenderness that children bring, and become treasured keepsakes that grow in meaning as your family grows. Many families tell me that the sibling portraits are their favorite images from the entire newborn session!
